It seems that Audi is looking at the end of the road for internal-combustion engines, although it’s going to be a gradual process toward battery-only vehicles.

In an interview with German publication Automobilwoche, Markus Duesmann – Audi’s chairman of the board – said the company has dropped any plans to develop new gasoline or diesel engines, effective immediately.

Duesmann said the decision to end future development is due to stricter emissions standards that will come into effect in the European Union by 2025 – and he told Automobilwoche he doesn’t think the new rules will have much benefit for the environment.

But while there won’t be any more all-new engines, Audi isn’t moving entirely into electricity just yet. Duesmann said that while it will be challenging, the company will adapt its existing engines to the new standards.
