The FCC Just Upended Decades of Research on Connected Vehicles

 


ยท        The FCC approved a rule change in mid-November that allows the previously closed vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2X) communication channel to be opened for unlicensed (Wi-Fi) use.

ยท        Although the V2X band has been used in experimental and pilot programs, virtually no vehicles on public roads are capable of using it at this point.

ยท        In January 2017, NHTSA and the DOT proposed making vehicle-to-vehicle communication a requirement in all new cars, but then the Trump administration came in, and the rule was never finalized.

It's not every day that one member of a president's administration accuses another of endangering Americans. But Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao didn't let norms get in the way when she commented on a rule change proposed by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman Ajit Pai.
