The global electric vehicle segment is beginning to take on a feeling of an arms race, only instead of missiles it is platforms that are being wielded by automakers.

Today in a Zoom and YouTube presentation heard around the world, Hyundai revealed its Electric-Global Modular Platform (or E-GMP), a dedicated battery electric vehicle architecture that will serve as the foundation for 23 BEVs the Hyundai Motor Group plans to introduce worldwide by 2025 under the Hyundai, Ioniq and Kia nameplates. Hyundai launched its dedicated ‘Ioniq’ BEV brand in August and announced three dedicated BEV models, the Ioniq 5,6 and 7, will be released by 2024. And in September sister company Kia announced plans to increase the share of BEV sales volumes as a proportion of total sales to 20 per cent by 2025. The company also recently teased seven dedicated BEV models it will release sequentially by 2027. Future Genesis electric vehicles will also utilize the E-GMP, along with some commercial and fleet applications.

The E-GMP joins a growing list of acronyms from automakers identifying their EV platforms, including MEB (Volkswagen Group), TNGA (Toyota), CMF-EV (Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi) and GEVP (General Motors). Think of them as the backbone of their respective EV development programs.
