Ferrari has reportedly lost the trademark for its most famous racer and the most expensive model of car in the world, the 250 GTO, under the European Union Intellectual Protection Office’s (EUIPO) “Use It Or Lose It” rules, reports Forbes.
To backtrack a little bit, Ferrari had just over a year ago launched a lawsuit against Ares Design, a coachbuilding company that drew inspiration from – “copied,” some might say – the Series 1 250 GTO when it styled its own retro custom, based on a modern Ferrari 812.
That litigation led to the GTO being ruled an irreplaceable work of art, one that could not be copied by anybody. However, the result only got Ares to double-down on its case; it quickly launched a counter-lawsuit to strip Ferrari of the rights of the 250 GTO.
