Gearheads know the Mazda brand as purveyors of machines that aim to be more fun than most in any given segment, and fans of the brand will have something to celebrate with recent announcements. Mazda isn’t leaving internal combustion engines for dead as they push towards the future. In fact, they are planning a very BMW-like approach for some cars; straight-six engines and rear-wheel drive.

It’s all part of their Declaration 2030, a year towards which many manufacturers have been looking in their long term plans. In line with Mazda’s identity, the strategy includes platforms with an engine mounted north-south and power heading to the rear wheels. This is good news for anyone with gasoline in their veins. Presumably with ever-popular crossovers and SUVs in mind, the concept images shown here have provisions for all-wheel drive as well.
